Mild to moderate swelling and soreness are normal for 2–3 days. You may also experience some bruising.
Slight bleeding or oozing is common for the first 12–24 hours. Avoid spitting or rinsing vigorously as this can dislodge the blood clot and delay healing.
Some difficulty opening your mouth or mild stiffness can occur but should improve within a few days.
Take any prescribed painkillers or antibiotics exactly as directed. Over-the-counter options like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help with pain and inflammation.
Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the cheek for 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off, during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
Do not use warm compresses or heat packs during the first 48 hours as this may increase swelling.
Stick to soft, cool, or room-temperature foods like yogurt, mashed potatoes, smoothies, or soups for the first 3–5 days. Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or chewy foods.
Drink plenty of fluids, but do not use a straw for at least 7 days to avoid dislodging the clot or implant site.
Both can impair healing and increase risk of complications. Avoid for at least 72 hours post-op.
Starting 24 hours after surgery, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) 2–3 times daily to keep the area clean.
Avoid brushing the surgical site for the first 2–3 days. Resume gentle brushing around the area after this time, being careful not to disturb the healing tissue.
Avoid flossing near the surgical site until fully healed.
Take it easy for the first 24–48 hours and avoid strenuous exercise or heavy lifting, which can increase bleeding or swelling.
Keep your head elevated with pillows while resting to help reduce swelling.
